Monuments and Memorials

Carlisle and its surrounding district has been central in a long and at times troubled history, as a consequence we have so many monuments and memorials that it would be too much to list them all on a web page. So we have provided a downloadable document:

Download your Monuments and Memorials PDF Guide here

The guide lists monuments and war memorials located with the Carlisle City Council geographical area. It is a “work in progress” and will be added to as further information becomes available.

We hope to provide up-to-date information on the location of the monuments and their purpose. In the document you will find an image of the monument, a brief description, comments on the purpose, the event or person being commemorated, the condition and responsibility for maintenance or ownership.

Further information, corrections to the existing monument information and monuments to add to the schedule would be welcomed

Stanwix residents are being urged to support a week-long Great British Spring Clean campaign.

A comprehensive clean-up of the Stanwix area will be held between Monday 5 and Saturday, 10 March. The local community are being asked to lend a hand.

Volunteers who want to take an active part are being asked to take part in a litter-pick. This will be held on Saturday, 10 March. Anyone that wants to take part should meet at Stanwix Community Association Centre, Church Street, Stanwix at 10am. Refreshments will be provided. All litter-picking equipment will be supplied by the City Council.

Local community groups and schools have also been approached to see if they can lend their support.

Carlisle City Cllr Paul Nedved, Ward Councillor for Stanwix Urban, said:

"This is the eighth year a Big Tidy Up has been held in Stanwix. It is a spring centrepiece in our community effort to assist in combatting the twin blights of litter and dog fouling with the support of residents, community groups and the City Council. This year we want to support the City Council’s plastic free Carlisle campaign - in addition to collecting litter, we will also be encouraging residents and school children to recycle and reduce their use of plastics.”

Stanwix Big Tidy will be joining forces with Keep Britain Tidy in their national "The Great British Spring Clean" in March. The campaign aims to inspire more people from community and voluntary groups, clubs, businesses across the country to get active and help clean up their neighbourhood.

Stanwix in Bloom are finalists in this year’s Britain in Bloom. Community participation and environmental responsibility are key parts of the campaign. Judging will take place this summer.

Great British Spring Clean: 2 - 4 March 2018

The Great British Spring Clean is a campaign with a simple aim: to bring people across the country together to clear up the litter that blights our towns, villages, countryside and beaches.

Keep Britain Tidy want to inspire 400,000 people to get outdoors, get active and help clear up the rubbish that lies around us. Together we can make a difference and clean up the environment on our doorstep.
