Eden Bridge Gardens are situated on the north bank of the River Eden at the foot of Stanwix, where the Gardens form an attractive entrance to Rickerby Park

Pedestrian access is from Eden Bridge or Rickerby Park.  There is limited car parking in Rickerby Park (enter off the Brampton Road, or via the village of Linstock).

Facilities

For some peculiar reason, these gardens have been known locally for many years as the “Chinese Gardens”. However, there is nothing Chinese in the design and anybody knowledgeable in the works of Thomas Mawson, knows that he was famed for his grand Italianate designs, still existing at many stately homes including Rydal Hall in Cumbria.  Eden Bridge Gardens are ornamental gardens.  Built by Percy Dalton, the City's Engineer, in the early 1930's from a design by Prentice Mawson.  Eden Bridge Gardens are laid out with planted borders, shrubberies and ornamental ponds, with numerous sitting places for quiet contemplation overlooking the City of Carlisle and the River Eden.

Park Opening Times

Eden Bridge Gardens are open all day, every day, all year round.

A Strategic Framework for Culture in Carlisle was initiated in 2019 by a small steering group of Carlisle City Council, Prism Arts, Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery Trust and the University of Cumbria.  The consultation was designed to not only engage existing cultural specialists but to encourage a diverse range of voices representing diversity, business, education, health, individual and freelance artists and creative practitioners to contribute to shaping the future arts and cultural agenda.

Discover Carlisle has lots of ideas for things to see and do in and around England’s biggest city
