Carlisle Christmas Lights Switch-On

Preparations are underway for this weekend’s Carlisle Christmas Lights Switch-On (Sunday, 17 November).

Much loved UK Pop band East 17 and boyband favourite Max George will headline Carlisle’s Christmas Lights Switch-On event.

One of the most popular bands of their generation, East 17 sold nearly two million records and the same number of singles in the UK alone and worldwide have sold more than 18 million records. Mixing up hip hop, r&b and pop into their own style, the group had huge hits such as ‘House of Love’ and ‘Let It Rain’.

Max George is a British singer, TV personalist and actor. A former member of the boy band, The Wanted, he landed his first acting role in the sixth series of the USA TV series Glee.

The Christmas Lights Switch-On event will also be a showcase of local community groups and performers including local singer Joe Hurst, Rocket Theatre School and Studio A Dance.

The event will be hosted by ITV Britain’s Got Talent, Barbara Nice.

The star-studded Christmas Lights Switch On stage will be in place in the city centre pedestrianised area, outside the Old Town Hall, between 3.30pm and 5.30pm. Organised by Carlisle City Council, it will provide a packed family entertainment programme, to suit all ages.

The Mayor of Carlisle, Cllr Marilyn Bowman will trigger a galaxy of Christmas lights in the city centre at 5pm. The Christmas Lights Switch-On is part of Carlisle's countdown to Christmas.

East 17

Much loved UK Pop band East 17 achieved 18 Top 20 singles and had four of their albums make the Top 10 of the charts. One of the most popular bands of their generation, they were often in the tabloids and had a naughtier image than that of peers like Take That. Mixing up hip hop, r&b and pop into their own style, the group had huge hits such as ‘House of Love’ and ‘Let It Rain’.

The band has sold nearly two million records and the same number of singles in the UK alone and worldwide have sold more than 18 million records. Named after the postcode of their Walthamstow home, the band initially broke through with Brian Harvey as lead singer and dancer. Their songs were written chiefly by Mortimer and paired off his rapping with Harvey’s smooth delivery. After a number of splits and reunions, the band are now back performing and releasing albums and singles such as Dark Light and “I Can’t Get You Off My Mind.” Having performed many sell out world tours the band are still much loved and have an infectious style that means they are adding new fans to their already huge base of older ones.

The current line-up includes original member, Terry Coldwell.

Max George
Born on September 6, 1988, in Manchester, England, Max George grew up loving sports and played for the Preston North End football club. He also developed a love for music and eventually joined a boy band called Avenue, which was featured on the U.K. hit TV show The X Factor but was later disqualified. After the band broke up, George went on to join another boy band, The Wanted, which has gone on to global success, including two No. 1 singles.

The Wanted’s self-titled debut album was released in October 2010. Powered by a hugely successful debut single, “All Time Low,” which reached No. 1 on the U.K. singles chart, the album jumped to No. 4 in the United Kingdom, going on to launch three U.K. Top 20 singles. The group’s second number one single, “Glad You Came,” their biggest hit thus far, came from their second album, Battleground, released in November 2011.

In 2014, following The Wanted’s success in the United States, he landed his first acting role in the sixth series of the TV series Glee in the role of Clint, the leader of rivals ‘Vocal Adrenaline’.

Barbara Nice

Stockport housewife, cleaner to the stars, keen ‘Take a Break’ reader Barbara, has been delighting live comedy audiences for 25 years with her unbridled enthusiasm.

She gave up the domestic bliss of Tupperware and Pound Stretcher shops, for the unpredictability of the comedy world, but no audience is too rowdy for her to handle. Barbara performs playful, life-affirming shows for all the family. With the affectionate attitude of a playgroup leader at a wild Iggy Pop concert, she is guaranteed to warm the heart of any audience. She has been compared to Victoria Wood, Mrs. Merton, and Julie Walters.

A Barbara Nice show is guaranteed to get you laughing, and come out of the show feeling better than when you went in.
