Carlisle City Council budget agreed

Carlisle City Council has set its budget for 2021/22 at a Special Full Council meeting on Wednesday 17 February 2021.

The council has successfully achieved or identified over £9million in transformational savings since 2010/11. A revised savings requirement has been calculated of £0.5million in 2021/22; increasing to £1.2million in 2022/23 and further increasing to £2.05million in 2023/24.

Leader of Carlisle City Council, Cllr John Mallinson, said:

“Even through extremely challenging times, we have continued to deliver services and support our local residents and businesses. Thanks to everyone that has taken the time to contribute towards our new budget. It continues to focus on the priorities of the Council and aims to boost our economy as well as promoting health and wellbeing within our communities.

“This year’s budget also recognises and supports local mental health charities. The coronavirus outbreak is continuing to have a huge impact on our local communities, and we need to do all we can to support local residents.”

Deputy Leader of Carlisle City Council, Cllr Gareth Ellis, added:

“Businesses and households throughout Carlisle have had to cope with unexpected financial circumstances throughout COVID-19. We do not believe now is the time for large council tax increases. We have kept our proposals to around 50p extra a month for a Band D property.

“This is a solid budget that deals with the realities of our situation and looks to improve our city’s economy, our city’s environment and our city’s communities.”
