Does your catering business offer healthy options?

Carlisle businesses and catering establishments that offer healthier food options and use locally sourced produce are benefitting from their ‘award winning’ status.

Local Healthy Options Award scheme is a Carlisle City Council initiative developed with Cumbria County Council and Healthy City Carlisle. It aims to encourage local cafes, restaurants and takeaways to provide healthier food options, whilst supporting the local economy and showcasing our fantastic local food offer.

Awards are given to businesses that have a good Food Hygiene Rating and also provide healthier food choices, techniques and where possible, use locally sourced ingredients.

Businesses that get a score of 75% or more are awarded with a Local Healthy Options Award and those with 100% achieve a gold Award. Since the successful launch of the scheme last year, 11 gold awards and 5 standard awards have been achieved by local businesses

Emma Goodman, from Off the Wall Coffee Shop was one of the first award winners and achieved Gold in January 2015. She said:

“Winning the award had a very positive impact on the business. Being food conscious has been important to us from when we first opened Off The Wall coffee shop in 2009, so it was such an honour to have had our love of food recognised by winning a Local Healthy Option Award.

“Our business has recently expanded with the addition of a patisserie, selling fantastic breads, homemade cakes and organic wine. It’s been a great showcase of our products and has given us the added opportunity to talk to customers about our beliefs in food. For us it’s not just about low fats and sugars. It’s also about good quality natural ingredients, sourcing products from; local providers, free range, organic and fairtrade whenever possible. We are noticing a trend now towards people being more food conscious, with people showing interest in unique products; which is fantastic!

“One of the best things to come out of winning the award is that we have been able to make connections to other like-minded businesses in the area, through social media like Twitter, using @foodcarlisle and @carlislepartner to reach local and some not so local people. It’s great to know that there is support out there from LHOA people, creating a fantastic network and being able to all work together to promote not just healthy eating, but Cumbria as well!”

Carlisle College is latest Gold winner. Andy Dodds, Director- Business Development & Marketing at Carlisle College, said:

"We are delighted to achieve Gold standard in the Local Healthy Options Awards in recognition of our focus on healthier food options for our students and the use of locally sourced produce. The food that we offer plays an important part in contributing to the wellbeing of our students and to our learning environment.  The award has provided a focus for making changes to our food offer and the feedback that we have received to these changes has been very positive."
