Prospective candidates

Prospective candidates and agents for this May’s Local Elections are being given the chance to find out more about the election process.

Carlisle City Council is offering potential candidates and agents the chance to meet up with the Returning Officer Jason Gooding and the City Council’s Electoral Registration Officer before the close of nomination deadline on Friday, 6 April 2018.

A briefing on the Local Election process will be held at 4pm on Thursday, 8 March in the Civic Centre. To find out more, contact Carlisle City Council on 01228 817555.

Carlisle City Council has 52 Councillors. Each Councillor serves one of 22 wards.

Elections will held in 17 Carlisle City Council wards: Brampton; Belah; Belle Vue; Botcherby; Castle; Currock; Dalston; Denton Holme; Harraby; Longtown & Rockcliffe; Morton; St Aidan’s; Stanwix Urban; Stanwix Rural; Upperby; Wetheral and Yewdale.

To qualify as a candidate for the Local Elections, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old;
  • Be a British, qualifying Commonwealth, or Irish citizen or  a citizen from a member EU state;
  • Have a connection with the Carlisle area - such as by being a registered elector or occupying land or property in the City Council area; and
  • Not being disqualified by being subject to a Bankruptcy order, holding a politically restricted post, being sentenced to a term of imprisonment of three months or more without the option of paying a fine during the last five years or other disqualifiers.

    The official Notice of Election for the City Council elections will be published on Friday, 23 March 2018. Candidates have until 4pm on Friday, 6 April 2018 to submit their nominations. Nomination packs are available from Electoral Services, Civic Centre, Carlisle or by telephoning 01228 817555.

The deadline to register in time for the election is midnight on Tuesday 17 April 2018.

The deadline for new postal vote applications or changes to existing Postal or Proxy applications is 5pm on Wednesday 18 April 2018.
