The Central Plaza building is in a serious state of disrepair and works are currently underway to make the building safe.
A recent inspection identified some loose masonry on the front elevation. This poses immediate danger to pedestrians and vehicles.
In partnership with Cumbria County Council’s highways team, the footpath and carriageway adjacent to the building was closed yesterday evening (Tuesday, 1 May) and continues to be closed. This in the interest of public safety.
We are advising motorists and pedestrians to find an alternative route.
Following further discussion with Cumbria County Council, a decision has been taken to close both carriageways and footpaths on Victoria Viaduct from its junction with James Street to its junction with Blackfriars Street. Bush Brow will also be closed. The closures will come into effect from 5pm today (Wednesday 2 May).
Until further assessment of the building and a plan of action are agreed, we are unable to say how long the closures will be in place. Our priority is to ensure the building is safe and all possible steps are being taken to find the quickest way to do this.
