Transparency in Local Government

The Government has made transparency and open data a key priority as it fosters accountability, drives improvements in public services by informing choice, and stimulates innovation and growth.

Open civil society, technical advances on the internet, greater accountability and efficiencies in delivering public services drive the opening up of public sector data. Open data means the data is free to access, use and reuse and is available via the internet based on the open government licence.

Legal Requirements

The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) has issued a mandatory Local Government Transparency Code that means that councils have to publish the following information:

Datasets for re-use

All of the data sets provided here where the copyright is held by Carlisle City Council are provided under the terms of the Open Government Licence unless explicitly stated otherwise. You will see that this licence encourages you to download and re-use our data, which may include activities which generate an income.

We do not have the authority to grant re-use of third party data, and so the re-use of any third party data is not covered by the Open Government Licence, unless stated (as for example Ordnance Survey is covered by the Open Government Licence) .

    • Deputy Chief Executive - Deputy Chief Exeuctive and directly responsible for Community Services Directorate.

    The scale of the local authority

    • Carlisle City Council employs 448 people, which is a full time equivalent of 391.98 staff (March 2017).
    • The net revenue budget for Carlisle City Council for 2016/2017 is £12.047m and the capital budget is £3.182m.   This was approved by full council in February 2017.
