Carlisle City Council is providing local businesses with free access to its local business support and grant portal provided by Open4Business. This is tailored for the Carlisle area and includes local, regional and national schemes.

Business can also search for funding relevant to their size and sector. To use the portal, you will first need to register with Open4Business.

Low Carbon Lake District Grants - Supporting you to reduce the carbon footprint of your community group or business

The Lake District Foundation funds effective and evidence-based projects that share our goal that the Lake District and Cumbria will be an inspirational example of sustainable development in action, and a place where a prosperous economy, world-class visitor experiences and vibrant communities come together to sustain its spectacular landscape, wildlife and cultural heritage.

The total size of the grant pot is £1,000,000 and applications will be reviewed by an independent expert panel. Funding is available to community groups and businesses from a range of sectors, and your businesses or group will need to either operate within the Lake District National Park or have some impact within the Lake District National Park.

Indicative Projects and Criterea

  • Projects will be assessed based on potential carbon savings per £ invested.
  • Examples of types of project we might fund include: 
  • Low Carbon energy generation such as Solar Photo Voltaic, Solar Thermal, Biomass, Anaerobic digestion, Small hydro power, and Ground and Air Source Heat Pumps 
  • Energy efficiency projects such as Variable Speed drives, Voltage optimisation, Infrared Heating, LED lighting, and upgrading to efficient appliances. 
  • Sustainable transport such as Vehicle Charging Points and e-cargo bikes 
  • AI and smart technology, such as smart food waste bins 
  • Behaviour change and engagement
