Background

The McCarthy Stone Foundation was launched in 2020 and is an independent registered Charitable Incorporated Organisation governed by a board of volunteer trustees from McCarthy Stone and independent members from outside the organisation. The Foundation aims to deliver a grants programme, longer-term charity partnerships and volunteering opportunities.

The Small Grants Programme offers funding for grassroots and volunteer-led charities.

Objectives of Fund

The Foundation supports: older people facing isolation, loneliness, or poor health; young people who may be falling behind personally and academically; and communities in need of regeneration.

Value Notes

One-off grants up to £5,000 are available.

Additional help is available to applicants to benefit the project: access to a network of partners to bring together volunteers, ranging from construction artisans through to volunteers with a wide range of experience and expertise.

Match Funding Restrictions

Match funding is not a specified requirement.

Who Can Apply

Grassroot and volunteer-led charities and community groups plus CICs and social enterprises may apply.

The project must be legally charitable and unrestricted funds will only be awarded to registered charities.

Organisations must have:

  • A governing document.
  • A registered bank account in the name of the organisation.

The following criteria should be addressed for applications to the Small Grants Programme:

  • Improve the health and wellbeing of older people.
  • Help young people through intergenerational activity.
  • Contribute to regenerating the local community.

Proposals that can integrate all three criteria are encouraged.

Restrictions

The following are not eligible for funding:

  • Contributions to general appeals or circulars.
  • Religious activity which is not for wider public benefit.
  • Public bodies to carry out their statutory obligations.
  • Activities which solely support animal welfare.
  • Activities which have already taken place.
  • Grant-making by other organisations.
  • Privately owned and profit-distributing companies or limited partnerships.

Eligible Expenditure

Support for projects that address the following are provided:

  • Help young people overcome educational challenges:
    • Commit volunteering days every year to support children with additional learning needs.
    • Build long-term partnerships with charities, local schools, and community groups.
    • Provide grant funding for charities and community groups supporting children with additional learning needs.
    • Promote intergenerational learning opportunities.
  • Health and wellbeing of older people:
    • Provide grant funding to community charities supporting the needs of older people.
    • Support projects that include intergenerational or community regeneration.
    • Partner with charities who actively engage older people in community activities.
    • Actively facilitate opportunities for volunteering.
    • Advocate and campaign for older people.
  • Create and enhance community spaces:
    • Ensure community spaces are accessible and able to be enjoyed by all ages.
    • Promote opportunities for generations to enjoy work and recreation together.
    • Bring together communities through volunteering.
    • Partner with community charities to develop sustainable community spaces.

How To Apply

Applications are accepted any time and are reviewed by the Trustees quarterly.

The Foundation website should be checked to confirm cut-off dates for each round of applications.

Initially, an expression of interest form should be submitted. This will be reviewed and, if selected, the main application form will be sent plus a copy of the Grant Making Policy.
