MOREhedges

15 September 2021/Categories: Grants_and_Funding

Financial support is available for farmers and landowners in the UK to help them plant more hedges.

Fund Information

Funding body:
Woodland Trust
Maximum value:
Discretionary
Application deadline:
None specified

Background

MOREhedges is administered by the Woodland Trust. The Woodland Trust is a UK conservation charity dedicated to the protection of the UK’s native woodland heritage. The Trust campaigns to protect ancient woods, improve woodland biodiversity, increase native woodland cover and increase understanding and enjoyment of woods.

Objectives of Fund

The MOREhedges project is intended to create new ecological links with woodland in the surrounding landscape. New hedging must connect with:

  • At least 0.2 hectares of existing or newly planted woodland (0.1ha in Scotland).
  • Woodland via established hedgerows within 500m of the new hedge.

Applicants must plant at least 100 metres of new hedgerow in a single run.

Value Notes

The MOREhedges scheme includes saplings, advice and funding for new hedging projects of 100 metres or more. The Trust can subsidise up to 75% of the cost if applicants plant 100 metres or more of new hedging and allow a large tree to grow every six metres.

Who Can Apply

Funding is available for any landowners or farmers to plant hedges on their land as long as eligibility criteria are met. Anyone can apply on behalf of the landowner; however, they must have the landowner’s permission.

MOREhedges funding is designed to create new wildlife corridors by connecting trees with the surrounding landscape.

Planting of 100-250 metres of new hedgerow is eligible provided it:

  • connects directly with at least 0.2ha of existing or newly planted woodland (0.1ha in Scotland);

Or

  • connects to existing hedgerows that then connect to woodland, so extending an existing corridor.

Restrictions

The scheme cannot support the replanting or gapping up of existing hedgerows.

The Trust cannot arrange or fund fencing or planting contractors.

Location

United Kingdom

How To Apply

Applications are now being taken for planting between November 2021 and March 2022.

Applications are made online.
