15 July 2016 / Categories: News Carlisle key Case Study in Northern Powerhouse Report The Institute for Public Policy Research have recently published a report titled ‘The Role of Small and Medium-sized Towns and Cities in Growing the Northern Powerhouse’ in which Carlisle is a case study alongside Burnley, Doncaster and Wigan. The report highlights that the North’s small and medium cities contribute £82bn a year to the UK economy, more than Wales and Northern Ireland combined. Small and medium cities, including Carlisle, are therefore essential to boosting growth in the Northern Powerhouse. The analysis finds that many small and medium-sized cities do face significant challenges from not being better connected to bigger cities. But they can overcome these problems with a clear focus on their own economic strengths; tackling local skills problems; and collaborating with big-city neighbours.
