Canoe Foundation

06 April 2021/Categories: Grants_and_Funding

Grants are available for clubs, community groups and Local Authorities across the UK for projects that improve the accessibility of available waterways and canoeing facilities and protect the natural environment.

Fund Information

Funding body:
Canoe Foundation
Maximum value:
£ 10,000
Application deadline:
31/08/2021

Background

The Canoe Foundation raises money; informs and educates; and allocates funds, in line with its main purpose to “support all to enjoy and benefit from the experience of paddling on our water in a sustainable manner”. The Foundation does this through grant making that facilitates improvements to suitable landing and launching points and by promoting the conservation of inland waterways, rivers, oceans and the environment, whilst allowing water users from all sectors of the community to have an enjoyable and readily accessible experience.

Objectives of Fund

The funding is for projects that will improve accessibility to waterways and facilities thereby enabling greater use of them. There is particular interest in enabling enhanced participation in paddle sports for all people.

Value Notes

Grants of between £500 and £10,000 are available.

In exceptional circumstances, grants for over £10,000 will also be considered.

Match Funding Restrictions

Matched or crowd funding is not essential but helps demonstrate the degree of local commitment to a project and to extend the number of projects that can be supported.

Who Can Apply

Applications are open to clubs, community groups, Parish Councils, Local Authorities or anyone in the UK with an active interest in improving access to water for recreational users and protecting the environment.

This should be organisations or partnerships with local paddle sport groups who will continue to support the use of the improvements on an ongoing basis.

Location

United Kingdom

Restrictions

The Foundation is unlikely to award any funds for routine maintenance.

Eligible Expenditure

The funding is intended for the following purposes:

  • New or improved launching points in urban or rural locations or as part of a water trail, such as steps or pontoons. Linked promotion of access points including signage or maps to increase participation and use.
  • Incorporating better accessibility or facilities at waterside locations which might improve the parking or changing aspects of a site.
  • Improving the quality of the waterways and oceans through support, for example practical kits, for a clean-up or an improved natural habitat.

The focus for the current funding round is on:

  • Increasing and protecting public access points to water for recreational users.
  • Creation of sustainable launching and landing sites, to and alongside water, for all sectors of the community and abilities.
  • Protecting and enhancing the natural environment.

The types of projects that can be funded include:

  • Launch and landing platforms, steps or ramps.
  • Improvements to pathways and accessible routes to the waters edge.
  • Signage and information that promotes positive behaviour (eg, Countryside code, “Check, Clean, Dry”, take your litter home).
  • Designated or additional parking for water users.
  • Works to address erosion and create more sustainable access points.
  • Projects that actively engage recreational water users in helping protect the waterway environment (eg, river clean initiatives, habitat creation or invasive non-native species action).
  • Projects that are multiuser or can benefit more than one user group.

How To Apply

The closing date for applications is 31 August 2021.

Grants for projects that are able to commence quickly may be awarded before the funding window closes, and therefore organisations are encouraged to apply early.

An online application form is available from the Canoe Foundation's website.

Any questions about the Canoe Foundation should be made using the 'Contact Us' form on the Canoe Foundation's website.

Payment Procedure

Grant payments are in arrears, on a direct payment, or pass-through basis.
