Background
Growth Hubs first were first created in 2014, when the government announced there should be a localised approach to address issues and barriers to growth within the different regions of England. While there are some overlaps in their geographic boundaries, each Growth Hub sits within a Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) area. There are currently 38 LEPs in England, following a merger between Northamptonshire and South East Midlands LEPs in 2016.
Objectives of Fund
Growth Hubs work with local and national, public and private sector partners - such as Chambers of Commerce, Federation of Small Businesses, universities, Enterprise Zones and banks, co-ordinating local business support and connecting businesses to the right help for their needs.
Growth Hubs focus on the tangible delivery of business support within each region, providing face-to-face professional advice to businesses and signposting them to the best resources from both the public and private sector within the area.
Some Growth Hubs will offer sector specific programmes and funding opportunities, dependent on the strengths and growth areas within their local economies. Support may target advanced manufacturing or space technology, for example. However, Growth Hubs are open to all businesses, regardless of their sector, and most of the programmes offered are open to all companies.
Value Notes
The Growth Hub provides a range of business support initiatives. This may include access to financial advice, relocation assistance, business coaching and mentorship, support with setting up and growing a business and boosting jobs and skills.
Occasionally, the Growth Hub may have its own funds available for which local firms can apply. Where grants and loans are being offered, it should be noted that they are likely to be highly competitive. As such, they may have a limited window of opportunity to apply and can be withdrawn at short notice. Interested parties are advised to contact the Growth Hub directly to ascertain what programmes of support are available at any given time.
