A former brick works, Hammonds Pond is now a busy local park with many recreational opportunities. Hammond's Pond is situated on a hill at Upperby, to the south of the City of Carlisle.

Facilities

Visitors to Hammond's Pond are offered a variety of recreational features:

  • Two car parks, off Blackwell Road and off Buchanan Road with FREE parking
  • Café with disabled access, toilets including disabled toilets and baby changing: Café: Open daily from Easter to 31 October, 10am - 4pm 
  • Public toilets, (outside the café) - Closed from 2 October 2022 until Easter 2023
  • Childrens play areas
  • Full sized and junior football pitches
  • All weather Multi Use Game Area
  • Miniature Railway and Headquarters of the Carlisle and District Model Engineering Society Miniature Railway: 2pm - 4pm Sundays only (Easter to end of October)
  • Flat accessible paths running throughout the park providing circular routes

History of Hammond's Pond

  • In 1884 the land belong to Charles Bromley Brick Works, the waterlogged land being used to collect clay and make bricks
  • The land then came into the ownership of Archie Hammond who created one big pond from a series of smaller lakes, with the idea of creating a boating lake.  He landscaped the area, built an animal house, tennis courts, a dance floor and flower beds.  He called it "Pleasureland" and it openend on Whit Sunday in 1923
  • After the death of Archie Hammond the area became the property of the City Fathers in 1931, for the price of £1850

Play area details:

Major redevelopment of play area throughout the summer of 2021.  This may mean that the play area is not accessible for short periods of time while work is being carried out.

· Age range play area equipment aimed at : Infants area: 0 - 6/8  Junior area: 6/8 - mid teens

· Accessible equipment : Not at present but play area being redevloped over the summer of 2021 to include inclusive play equipment

· Is the play area fenced : Infant area fenced, teen area unfenced

 

Opening times

Park: All day every day

Café: Opem daily from Easter to 31 October, 10am - 4pm .

Miniature Railway: 2pm - 4pm Sundays only (Easter to end of October).

Special events

Upperby Gala - Whitsun Bank Holiday (end of May).
