Funding for projects which focus on the protection of cultural heritage under threat in one or more of the Fund’s target countries.
A partnership between the British Council and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), The Cultural Protection Fund aims to create opportunities for social and economic development through building capacity to safeguard and promote cultural heritage overseas.
This round will see large grants of £100,000 to £2 million on offer for projects commencing in autumn 2022. A small grants round is set to open in July 2022.
Non-governmental organisations (NGO), charity or voluntary organisations, public sector organisations, and academic institutions based anywhere in the world can apply, but they must be working in one of the following countries or states:
- Middle East and North Africa (MENA) - Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Occupied Palestinian Territories, Syria, Tunisia and Yemen.
- East Africa - Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.
- South Asia - Afghanistan.
The fund has three outcome areas, with individual outcomes listed on the British Council website:
All projects must ensure that cultural heritage is safeguarded for future generations and meet at least one outcome falling under the ‘Society’ outcome area. This could include ensuring local people have developed new skills or that the local area is enhanced for the benefit of communities and visitors.
