Funding focus redirected to plug-in wheelchair accessible vehicles, taxis, motorcycles, vans and trucks.
The Government announced on 14 June that it is closing the plug-in car grant scheme to new orders effective immediately.
In its ‘drive towards net zero and [to] ensure effective use of taxpayer funds’, the Government will now refocus £300 million in grant funding towards extending plug-in grants to boost sales of plug-in taxis, motorcycles, vans and trucks and wheelchair accessible vehicles.
The Government also confirmed in its press release that all existing applications for the [plug-in] grant will continue to be honoured and where a car has been sold in the two working days before the announcement, but an application for the grant from dealerships has not yet been made, the sale will also still qualify for the grant.
Commenting, Transport Minister Trudy Harrison said by way of explanation:
“Having successfully kickstarted the electric car market, we now want to use plug-in grants to match that success across other vehicle types, from taxis to delivery vans and everything in between, to help make the switch to zero emission travel cheaper and easier.”
The press release as well as the grant guidelines for plug-in wheelchair accessible vehicles, taxis, motorcycles, vans and trucks can be found on the GOV UK website.
How To Apply
The Government announced that as of 14 June 2022, the plug-in grant is no longer available to cars. It remains open, however, to plug-in taxis, motorcycles, vans and trucks and wheelchair accessible vehicles.
Applications can be made at any time.
