Phase Two of Industrial Fuel Switching Competition Now Open

Energy, Environment & Climate

26 September 2022/Categories: Grants_and_Funding

UK businesses will be funded to support the development of solutions to switch industry from high to low carbon fuels.

The Industrial Fuel Switching Competition supports innovation in the development of pre-commercial fuel switch and fuel switch enabling technology for the industrial sector, to help industry switch from high to lower carbon fuels.

A total of £55 million is being competitively awarded to projects that can help develop a wide range of industrial fuel switching solutions. Funding will be awarded through SBRI (Small Business Research Initiative) contracts, providing 100% funding for pre-commercial solutions, via a two-phase process – feasibility and demonstration.

Phase 1, which is now closed, awarded funding for feasibility studies into fuel switch and fuel switch enabling solutions.

Phase 2, which is now open to applications, will award up to £49.4 million in funding for projects to demonstrate fuel switch and fuel switch enabling solutions. Between £1 million and £6 million will be provided per project.

Funding is divided into three lots:

  • Fuel switch and fuel switch enabling technologies for hydrogen.
  • Fuel switch and fuel switch enabling technologies for electrification.
  • Fuel switch and fuel switch enabling technologies for biomass, wastes, and other net zero compatible fuels.

Phase 2 is open to all industrial sectors and fuel switching technology developers in the UK, whether or not they have taken part in Phase 1. This phase supports fuel switch and fuel switch enabling technologies at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4 to 7 at the start of the project.

Applicants need to register by 11 November 2022 (14:00 GMT) if they plan to apply to the competition.
