Vehicle-to-everything Innovation: IUK Launches Bi-directional Charging Demonstrations Competition

Energy, Environment & Climate

22 March 2023/Categories: Grants_and_Funding

UK registered organisations can apply grants for small-scale demonstrations of novel vehicle-to-everything (V2X) energy technology providing storage and flexible services.

Administered by Innovate UK (IUK), this competition will invest in innovative vehicle-to-everything (V2X) energy small scale demonstration projects, addressing barriers to enabling energy flexibility from bi-directional electric vehicle (EV) charging.

V2X can facilitate energy system flexibility by enabling the export of electricity from the batteries of EVs to other systems such as buildings, storage devices or the grid. The aim is to provide flexibility to support integration of additional renewable generation at lowest cost.

Up to £9.4 million has been allocated to fund industrial research projects. Each project’s total grant funding request must be a maximum of £1.56 million. V2X solutions for on-road vehicles are in scope for this competition, including cars, vans, buses, freight, special-use vehicles such as emergency response and refuse collection vehicles.

This competition is open to collaborations only. To lead a project an organisation must be a UK registered business of any size. It must collaborate with at least two other UK registered organisations.

Project participants can include, but are not limited to:

  • Transport sector stakeholders such as vehicle manufacturers, charging infrastructure providers and operators.
  • Energy sector stakeholders such as distribution network operators (DNOs), energy suppliers, flexibility system operators, equipment or system developers.
  • IT, digital and cyber security stakeholders, for example mobility as a service, or home energy management.
  • End users and infrastructure owners such as local authorities and fleet operators both public and private.

To collaborate with the lead, an organisation must be a UK registered business of any size, academic institution, charity, not-for-profit, public sector organisation, or research and technology organisation (RTO).

The deadline for applications is 10 May 2023 (11:00 BST).

How To Apply

The competition opened on 21 March 2023. The deadline for applications is 10 May 2023 (11:00 BST).

Applications are made online.
