Launch of New Transport Research and Innovation Grants (TRIG)

Transport, Infrastructure & Communications

13 December 2022/Categories: Grants_and_Funding

Through this programme, funding is available for SMEs, universities and large businesses in the UK to support technology innovation within the UK’s transport sector.

The Transport Research and Innovation Grant (TRIG) supports future leaders in transport innovation by awarding 100% funding for the development of new technology. The programme also provides a collaborative space for innovators to work with the Department for Transport (DfT) on realising shared goals.

Proposals should clearly highlight the innovative and novel aspects of their potential transport solution. The solution could well be a completely novel idea or approach. However, approaches or innovations from transport or other areas, applied in a novel way to the transport system, are also of interest.

Over five separate calls, in addition to an open call, the DfT will offer innovators grants of up to £30,000 to undertake early stage, high-risk research and development projects. DfT is particularly interested in solutions that address the following challenges:

  • Local Transport Decarbonisation
  • Maritime Decarbonisation
  • The Future of Freight
  • Transport Resilience to Severe Weather and Flooding
  • Improving the Rail Passenger Experience

TRIG is open to SMEs, large businesses, universities, and research and technology organisations based in the UK. The funder will consider proposals from consortia. However, the lead applicant who will receive the funding must be identified.

The deadline for applications is Sunday 15 January 2023.
