Local Government Re-organisation
Cumberland Council came into existence on 1 April 2023. It covers the former areas of Allerdale Borough Council, Carlisle City Council and Copeland Borough Council. It is now responsible for producing the Local Plan and other planning policy documents, including Minerals and Waste, for its area outside the Lake District National Park.
The Lake District National Park continues to be a separate Local Planning Authority. The Lake District Local Plan can be viewed here.
Cumberland Council inherited the local development plan documents of each of the former Councils including the Cumbria Minerals and Waste Local Plan documents. These documents will continue to be used, in the relevant former Council areas, to decide planning applications until they are replaced by new Cumberland Local Plan documents. All current and emerging Local Plans and supporting documents are listed in the Cumberland consolidated policy document below.
