Funding for Artists of Colour to Perform at Edinburgh Fringe - Deadline Imminent

| Return|

Provided by the Pleasance Theatre Trust, the Pleasance Development Fund has been established to help UK-based artists of colour bring their work to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

This Fund is the result of consultation with a cross-section of independent artists, companies and organisations with experience of presenting work at the Fringe and is a response to specific barriers facing artists of colour when presenting work in Festival contexts.

The funder hopes the programme will act as a catalyst for wider activity in the lead up and during the 2020 Fringe, bringing together artists and stakeholders to discuss how to make the event a ‘Safe Space for Artists of Colour’, acknowledging the intersectionality that will be present.

The scheme will provide financing, mentorship and programming opportunities. In 2020, there is £10,000 available, with productions receiving investment of up to £5,000 to support projects that would otherwise not be able to come to the Fringe.

For productions to eligible, at least 50% of a show's creators and at least 50% of the cast must identify as artists of colour. The funder’s definition of ‘Of Colour’ is inclusive to anyone who is marginalised or faces barriers within the industry for their race or ethnicity. Artists must be based in the UK. They must propose a Theatre or Children’s production that will be ready to be presented at Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2020.

Pleasance director Anthony Alderson said:

'I'm so pleased that we are launching this exciting initiative which enables us to champion new works from artists of colour.

'I really hope this paves the way for ensuring the Fringe is an even more open community and making sure important voices are heard.'

The deadline for applications is 27 February 2020.
