Open 4 Business Portal

To support our businesses during the current COVID-19 crisis, and into the recovery phase, Carlisle City Council is providing free access to Open 4 Business. Open4Business is designed to support businesses locate relevant up to date funding opportunities.

The portal is updated regularly with new local, regional and national funding announcements and can be easily searched by businesses on the basis of their industry, region and business size. The portal then provides information on how to apply for funding and contact funders directly. To search for grants for your business you will first need to register on the Open4Business website

Hadfield Charitable Trust - grants available for projects in areas of social needs

Grants are available for charitable organisations to carry out projects in areas of social needs (youth and employment, help for older people, the arts and the environment) in Cumbria.

Objectives of Fund

The overriding intention of the Trustees is that grants should benefit as many residents of Cumbria as possible with particular regard to those who are disadvantaged in any way.

Funding is intended to support charitable organisations working in the following areas:

  • Social needs.

  • Youth and employment.

  • Help for older people.

  • The arts.

  • The environment.

Value Notes

Funding is at the discretion of the Trust.

Up to £5,000 is available but most of awards are between £1,500 and £3,000.

Most grants are for one year. Occasionally two and three year awards may be considered if it is a vital project and its sustainability is at risk.

Match Funding Restrictions

Applicants are required to list all other funding applied for.

Who Can Apply

The following criteria apply:

  • Applicants should ideally be a registered charity, or applying to become one. However, any properly constituted body with charitable objectives can apply (though they should check with the Administrator first).

  • Applicants working with children or young people must have a written child protection policy in place.

  • National charities can only apply if:

    • They can clearly evidence the work they do in Cumbria.

    • They can provide an independent referee who lives in the County, and can vouch for their work in Cumbria.

Eligible Expenditure

Capital funding is preferred but revenue requests may be accepted in particular circumstances.

Projects should address the areas of social needs, youth and employment, help for older people, the arts and the environment.

Examples of previously funded groups include:

  • Bolton Low Houses Preschool

  • South Lakes Federation

  • Parish Church of St Ann, Ings

  • Walton Village Hall

  • Citizens' Advice Allerdale

  • Pitstop Project Barrow

  • West Cumbria Trades Hall

  • Workington Junior Squash Club

  • Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery

How To Apply

The annual deadlines for applications are on 1 February, 1 June, and 1 October. If the deadline date falls on a Sunday, noon on the following day will apply.

Application forms are available to download from the Trust's website. The completed application form should be sent by post to the Administrator.
