Open 4 Business Portal

To support our businesses during the current COVID-19 crisis, and into the recovery phase, Carlisle City Council is providing free access to Open 4 Business. Open4Business is designed to support businesses locate relevant up to date funding opportunities.

The portal is updated regularly with new local, regional and national funding announcements and can be easily searched by businesses on the basis of their industry, region and business size. The portal then provides information on how to apply for funding and contact funders directly. To search for grants for your business you will first need to register on the Open4Business website

Grants are available to voluntary and community groups in Cumbria for projects that benefit their community.

Funded by a donation of £100,000 by the Cumbria Newspaper Group in 2000 to create a long term capital fund, recommendations are now made by the CN Group Chief Executive. The scheme is administered by the Cumbria Community Foundation.

Objectives of Fund

The fund aims to support projects which support one of the Foundation’s aims:

  • Tackling disadvantage in rural communities.

  • Tackling disadvantage in pockets of deprivation including the 20% most deprived wards.

  • Supporting disadvantaged children and young people.

  • Hidden and emerging need.

Value Notes

Grants are usually for less than £1,000.

Who Can Apply

Volunteer-led grassroots groups are eligible to apply.

Applications from new and small groups are particularly welcome.




The following will not be funded:

  • Statutory organisations e.g. schools or Parish Councils.

  • Individuals.

  • Non-charitable sports or arts projects.

  • Promotion of religious doctrine.

  • Marketing, advertising or promotion including publications, conferences, exhibitions and web design.

Eligible Expenditure

Examples of activities supported include:

  • Singing for fun workshops.

  • Young carers' ocean voyage.

  • Refurbishment of community centre.

  • Safety equipment.

  • Recruiting, training and supporting volunteers.

  • Rewiring and suspended ceiling.

  • Junior football club coaching and training.

  • Disabled access.

  • Community market garden.

  • Drop-in club for older people.

How To Apply

Applications are accepted throughout the year and are normally considered every two months.
