Open 4 Business Portal

To support our businesses during the current COVID-19 crisis, and into the recovery phase, Carlisle City Council is providing free access to Open 4 Business. Open4Business is designed to support businesses locate relevant up to date funding opportunities.

The portal is updated regularly with new local, regional and national funding announcements and can be easily searched by businesses on the basis of their industry, region and business size. The portal then provides information on how to apply for funding and contact funders directly. To search for grants for your business you will first need to register on the Open4Business website

Henry Smith Charity - Holiday Grants for Children

Grants are available for schools, youth groups, not-for-profit organisations, and charities to provide access to recreational trips or holidays for groups of children aged 13 years and younger who experience disadvantage or disability and live in an area of high deprivation.

Background

The Henry Smith Charity is a grant making organisation which was established in 1628. The Charity's capital endowment now consists of a substantial portfolio of stock market investments, commercial property and agricultural property from which income for grants is derived

Objectives of Fund

The Charity aims to provide children aged 13 years or younger who are disadvantaged, disabled or from areas of high deprivation with a recreational holiday or outing they would not otherwise have the opportunity to experience.

Value Notes

One-off grants of between £500 and £2,500 are available.

Funding is available for a maximum of two consecutive years.

Match Funding Restrictions

Match funding is required as grants are normally limited to a maximum of two-thirds of the total cost of the trip.

Who Can Apply

Schools, youth groups, not for profit organisations and charities in the UK are eligible to apply.

Priority will be given to the 20% most deprived areas in the UK. This means areas that fall within the bottom 20% according to the National Indices of Deprivation.

Terms and Conditions

Successful organisations are expected to send a short report on the trip within three months of it having taken place.

Restrictions

Funding is not available for the following:

  • Trips outside of the UK.

  • Trips to theme parks or similar high cost attractions.

  • Trips for children over the age of 13 years.

  • Multiple trips with the same group of children.

  • Trips with a focus on education rather than fun.

  • Trips for families.

  • Trips for individual children.

  • Organisations that provide Children’s Holidays.

  • The running costs of play or holiday schemes.

  • Trips that have already taken place.

  • Trips to pantomimes.

  • Trips to sporting events.

  • Organisations with an income of expenditure of over £2 million (unless a school).

Organisations that have already received three years' funding, will not be considered for a further application until two years after the last grant was awarded.

Eligible Expenditure

Applications can be made for grants towards a single trip, which could be a day trip or a longer residential of up to seven days in length. This could be to a countryside or city location but must be outside of the children’s immediate locality. Examples include camping, trips to adventure activity centres or the seaside.

There is particularl interest in funding trips for children located in the bottom 20% of the National Indices of Deprivation.

How To Apply

There are four rounds of applications each year. The submission dates vary depending on when trips or holidays take place.

Applications for 2019 will be considered as follows:

  • Applications will be accepted between 17 December 2018 and 28 February 2019 for holidays taken between 1 February and 30 April 2019.

  • Applications will be accepted between 1 March and 30 April 2019 for holidays taken between 1 May and 30 June 2019.

  • Applications will be accepted between 1 May and 2 July 2019 for holidays taken between 1 July and 31 August 2019.

  • Applications will be accepted between 3 July and 16 November 2019 for holidays taken between 1 September and 31 December 2019.

All applications should be received at least six weeks before the date of the trip to allow for administrative processing and decision making.

All applications (except those from schools) must be accompanied by a copy of the organisation's most recent audited or independently inspected accounts, and a detailed budget and fundraising strategy for the trip or holiday which explains where the balance of funds will be/have been raised.
