AFTAID - Aid for the Aged in Distress

Indirect financial assistance for older people in distress in the UK who need essential items to make their lives more comfortable. Grants are paid directly to the provider or supplier of goods.

Established in June 1982, AFTAID amalgamated with the registered charity, 'Aid for the Aged', whose aims and objectives were also to alleviate the plight of older people in financial stress throughout the United Kingdom.

Objectives of Fund

AFTAID offers direct financial relief to older people in distress. This is often in emergency circumstances or to address a wide range of 'quality of life' issues which are not covered elsewhere. AFTAID concentrates its efforts and resources directly to older people in the United Kingdom who are struggling to meet their basic needs.

Value Notes

Grants are not awarded directly to the applicant. The payment is made directly to the provider of the services or goods.  A beneficiary does not receive the grant, but gets the help needed as soon as possible.

Who Can Apply

The beneficiary of the grant must be:

  • At least 65 years of age.

  • A UK citizen, resident in the United Kingdom.

  • On a lower income and have minimal savings.

A letter of support is required for all eligible applicants from a social worker, doctor or similar professional of the official care services.

Grants will not be made for the following:

  • Ongoing or retrospective payments.

  • Repayment of debts.

Eligible Expenditure

AFTAID award emergency grants for anything which is required to take away hardship from the day-to-day life of an older person. 

For example, this can include:

  • Mobility scooters.

  • Walk-in showers.

  • Radiators.

  • Cookers.

  • Refridgerators.

  • Washing machines.

  • Beds.

  • Bedding.

  • Clothing.

  • Rise/recliner chair.

  • Tumble drier.

  • Small emergency house repairs.

  • Carpeting.

  • Essential or emergency house cleaning.

  • Microwave.

  • Rewiring.

  • Central heating boiler.

  • Video intercom.

  • Installation of phone line.

  • TFT magnifier.

  • 'Blind' software for PC.

  • Wheelchair powerpack.

  • Wheelchair access ramp.

  • Bath lift.

How To Apply

Applications can be made at any time.

Applicants are required to fill in an online form, available from the AFTAID website, to provide the details which enable AFTAID to send a full grant application form by return email. This form must be completed and returned along with written support from care professionals (Doctor, Social Worker etc.) who are personally aware of the beneficiary's situation.
