Grants and Funding

Asda Foundation - COVID-19 Healthy Holiday Grants

03 June 2020/Categories: Grants_and_Funding

Objectives of Fund

Grants are available to support charitable groups in the UK to provide vulnerable children with nutritious meals during the summer holidays. Funding criteria will be flexible to allow for the most current government guidance on coronavirus/COVID-19 social distancing/lockdown restrictions.

For example:

  • Option one - if lockdown restrictions have been lifted at the time of the activity grants could be used to provide nutritious meals to children attending a holiday club.
  • Option two - if lockdown restrictions are still in place, grants could be used by a charitable group to deliver nutritious meals to deprived children and families in the local area.

Value Notes

Grants of up to £500 are available.

There is only one grant allowed per group. Applications are made via the group's local Asda Store's Community Champion and a total of £1,125 can be awarded per store.

Who Can Apply

Applications are accepted from registered charities, registered not-for-profit companies, community interest companies and unincorporated clubs or associations in the UK.

To be eligible, applicant organisations must be able to provide:

  • Clear rationale for how the grant money will be used.

  • A bank statement or deposit slip.

  • At least one accepted document as per below:

    • Registered charities - charity number/constitution.

    • Registered companies - company number/memorandum and articles of association.

    • Community interest companies (CICs) - company number/constitution/memorandum and articles of association.

    • Unincorporated club or association - constitution/club rules.

No grant payments will be made directly to individual families.

Eligible Expenditure

Grants can be used to support charitable groups providing nutritious meals to children during the school holidays. The way the funding can be used will be dependent on the government guidelines for social distancing /lockdown restrictions at the time of the activity. (Asda Foundation will follow each government’s individual decision across England, Wales, Scotland and NI.)

Option one

If social distancing is relaxed before school holidays, grants can be used by groups to provide nutritious meals for children attending healthy holiday activities during the summer holidays. For example, an afterschool club that wants to extend its activities to support children during the school holidays could use the grant to provide a meal and activities three days per week which will benefit 100 children per week. This will ensure that children have access to a nutritious meal and are able to socialise and have structured play sessions during the school holidays.

Option two

If social distancing has not been relaxed, grants can be used to enable groups to deliver provisions to deprived children and their families at home (in an area close to an Asda store) who are struggling for regular meals during the school holidays. For example, a local rotary club could use the grant to enable them to prepare ready meals in a local community centre and then deliver them to deprived children and families in their area.

Applicants must provide details of how they will use the grant for both options one and two. Applicants will then be notified once a funding decision is reached, but payment will only be made two weeks prior to the activity date, in line with the government guidance at that time.

How To Apply

Applications can be made at any time.

Application forms can be obtained from Asda Community Champions, who are based in local Asda stores. There are two different application forms, one for groups who are government entity organisations and another for groups who are non-government entities. (Guidance notes on completing these forms are available on the Asda Foundation website.)

All applications must be made via the applicant's local Asda Community Champion; applications made directly by organisations will not be accepted by the Foundation.

Applicants can use the store locator link on the Foundation website to get in touch with their local store and speak to their Community Champion about their project proposal.

Applications will be assessed within six weeks from the date the Community Champion submits the application to the Asda Foundation.
