Open 4 Business Portal

Carlisle City Council is providing local businesses with free access to its local business support and grant portal provided by Open4Business. This is tailored for the Carlisle area and includes local, regional and national schemes.

Business can also search for funding relevant to their size and sector. To use the portal, you will first need to register with Open4Business.

Co-op Local Community Fund

Grants are available for small, locally based voluntary and community groups to support projects which benefit local communities around Co-op food stores and funeral homes across the UK or the Isle of Man.

The funding is generated by the Co-op’s membership scheme which gives 1% of what they spend on selected Co-op branded products and services to local causes. Members can choose a local cause that they want their 1% to support.

Objectives of Fund

The funding aims to help communities to come together, co-operate and have a positive impact on community wellbeing – physically and virtually.

Value Notes

No minimum or maximum amount of funding is specified.

Most communities get £4,000 to £6,000 to share between three causes.

The funding will be made in two payments: April 2021 and November 2021.

Who Can Apply

Applications will be accepted from:

  • UK registered charities.

  • Scout, Guide or Woodcraft folk groups.

  • Registered community amateur sports clubs (CASCs).

  • Churches or chapels that are ‘excepted’ charities.

  • Co-operative societies.

  • Credit unions.

  • Community benefit societies.

  • Community interest companies.

  • Any other organisation that can prove they are not run for profit.

Preference will be given to organisations with an annual income of less than £1 million a year.


United Kingdom including the Isle of White.


Funding is not available for the following:

  • Projects that support individuals or overseas projects.

  • Projects that promote any political activities.

  • Projects that promote any religious beliefs. (Consideration will be given to projects led by religious organisations that are for the benefit of the whole community.)

  • Only pay for salaries or other running costs of an organisation.

  • Funding that will be given to other people or organisations.

  • Projects that are the responsibility of a local authority.

  • Donations to other organisations.

  • Projects that could harm the reputation of Co-op.

Eligible Expenditure

Funding is available for projects which benefit local communities centred around Co-op food stores and funeral homes.

To be eligible, projects must address at least one of the following:

  • Bring the community together to help those in need, providing access to life’s essentials such as community spaces, food and bereavement support.

  • Support the mental and physical health of others through community wellbeing activities.

  • Enable people to develop or share their skills to foster community spirit and build resilient communities for the future.

Projects or events must:

  • Take place in the UK or Isle of Man.

  • Benefit the local community.

  • Take place or will still be running after November 2021.

  • Meet the Co-operatives values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity. (In the tradition of their founders, Co-operative members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others.)

How To Apply

Applications will be accepted from 1 June 2020 until midnight 28 June 2020. Groups will find out if they have been successful by October 2020.
