Background

The John Spedan Lewis Foundation (JSLF) is focused on the personal interests of John Spedan Lewis, the founder of the John Lewis Partnership, who was a keen naturalist.

The Foundation provides funding for UK registered charities with natural history, wildlife conservation and horticulture among their stated charitable aims, continuing the interests of John Spedan Lewis.

Objectives of Fund

The Foundation is offering one-off emergency funding to support the core activities of UK registered charities who are experiencing financial hardship due to coronavirus/COVID-19 outbreak. This funding is only for charities that have natural history topics and horticulture explicitly stated among their charitable purposes.

Value Notes

The maximum grant available is £20,000.

Who Can Apply

Applications will be accepted from UK registered charities operating within the UK.

To be eligible, applicants must have

  • An income of less than £1 million in the last financial year.

  • Have natural history topics and horticulture are explicitly stated among their charitable purposes. Natural history topics can include wildlife conservation, entomology and ornithology. Horticulture is also included in our charitable objectives. Horticultural charities will need to evidence how activities directly benefit UK wildlife (e.g. wildlife habitat creation, increased insect food sources).

Priority will be given to applications where the funding will make a significant improvement to the charity's solvency and ability to operate over the next 3-12 months.

Recent grantees are welcome to apply.

The funding is not available for:

  • Individuals

  • Charities whose charitable purposes do not meet the aims of the Foundation.

  • Charities with an income of more than £1 million in the last financial year.

Eligible Expenditure

Emergency funding is to be used for core activities, including support for staff costs (permanent and fixed-term appointments).

How To Apply

Applications will be accepted over a two-week period. The closing date is 14 June 2020. Decisions on applications will be made by 28 June 2020.

Payment Procedure

Successful applicants can expect to receive payment by bank transfer within 10 days of being notified of the grant award.
