Carlisle City Council is providing local businesses with free access to its local business support and grant portal provided by Open4Business. This is tailored for the Carlisle area and includes local, regional and national schemes.

One-off grants for small local charities carrying out coronavirus/COVID-19 relief measures in support of vulnerable communities across the UK.

Objectives of Fund

United Way UK is working in partnership with businesses and other charitable organisations to reduce the impact of COVID-19 in local communities across the UK.

The Give Local COVID-19 Response aims to identify those small, local charities carrying out COVID-19 relief measures in support of vulnerable communities, to award them with grants to enhance and amplify their work.

Value Notes

An estimate of 20 small grants of £2,000, £3,000 and £5,000, and 3 community impact grants of £10,000 are being made available.

Who Can Apply

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be registered as charities – including independent schools registered as charities.

  • Have an average annual income of £300,000 or less.

  • Work in one of the following areas: education, financial stability, food insecurity, disability, mental health or domestic violence.

Grants will not be awarded to organisations working exclusively in the prevention or treatment of COVID-19, but rather organisations who work to support and manage the wider impacts of this crisis.




The funding cannot be used for:

  • Non-programme related activities like advocacy, marketing and fundraising.

  • New organisations

  • Medical research

  • Individuals

  • Cultural festivals

  • The advancement of religion

  • Animal welfare

  • Other grant making bodies

  • NHS Trusts

  • Loans or business finance

  • Universities

  • Sponsorship/marketing appeals/fundraising costs

  • Overseas projects/travel

  • Safety equipment for individual households

  • National or international charities

  • CCTV installation

  • Awareness campaigns without significant practical engagement.

Eligible Expenditure

Organisations may apply to start a new programme, or for the expansion or continuation of an existing programme. In either case, the programme must be in response to COVID-19 wider consequences.

The grant can be used to cover core costs including staff salary cost and volunteering expenses, supplies and equipment, travel expenses, training. All expenses to be covered need to be directly related to executing a programme that has a positive impact on the communities served.

How To Apply

The deadline for applications is 5 June 2020. Grantees are expected to be chosen by mid-June and funds are expected to be transferred by the end of June. All funds should be used by the end of September.

Organisations should use the online form which includes information on the grant requirements.

Payment Procedure

All grants will be paid out via BACS transfer.
