Relief Fund Launched for Zoos and Aquariums Affected by Coronavirus

19 May 2020/Categories: Grants_and_Funding

The Zoos Support Fund has been launched to aid licensed zoos and aquariums in England that have been affected by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The Government's social distancing guidance has meant that zoos and aquariums have had to close temporarily for the safety of their staff and customers. During this time, zoos are working to ensure their animal welfare standards are upheld and the animals' health needs continue to be met.

The scheme will support the industry, in particular smaller zoos, during this challenging time, offering funding to help cover costs relating to animal-keeping such as feed, heating and security.

There is a total funding pot of £14 million, from which individual grants of up to £100,000 can be applied for. The level of support provided will be based on the animals' needs within the establishment.

Lord Goldsmith, Animal Welfare Minister, said:

'Even in these very difficult times, the Government remains absolutely committed to high standards of animal welfare.

'This new Zoo Support Fund is designed to help those that need additional support to maintain the welfare of their animals.

'We are continuing to engage with some of the largest zoos to respond to their additional specific concerns.'

Those who are in severe financial difficulties are advised to apply as soon as possible to avoid delays in payment.
